Photo by @tyronefoto | The region of Codó in the northern Brazilian state of Maranhão was such a fascinating place to explore. I was photographing a story for NatGeo magazine on the “quilombos” of Brazil. Present day quilombos (they are called maroon communities in other countries) are descendants of slave communities, many of which had escaped bondage, and are found all over Brazil. These men are “tuning” their drums by warming them, preparing for a religious festival in one of the quilombo communities. #brasil #brazil #codo #maranhão @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #onassignment by natgeo http://ift.tt/1Wftjhw

Photo- @andy_bardon /// High in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, skier and adventurer @kitdski carries a survey grade GPS device to measure the summit elevations of the highest peaks in the range. We affectionately nicknamed this little device “E.T” on our trip, and while it did an amazing job of tracking our progress and elevation down to a centimeter, it added considerable weight and bulk to the backpack of @kitdski. Skis proved to be the most efficient way to travel in this rugged alpine terrain, and once we neared the tops of these mountains we were forced to use our crampons and ice tools to deal with the icy and windblown conditions. Our summit measurements were part of a broader project to help researchers measure the rate of glacial change in the region, and to help determine the impacts of climate change on this ecologically diverse area. /// Shot on assignment for @natgeo thanks to an Expeditions Council grant. Photo by @stevemccurryofficial // I shot this in image in Java, Indonesia during the monsoon, the earth’s most awesome climate event. There is usually too much or too little rain, and the health and livelihoods of rural people are dependent on a force which is indifferent to them. It has less direct effect on the urban population, which seems to grit its teeth and carry on.
For these two chilled Javanese girls huddled under a rice basket, the monsoon has lost its magic. With the rains, Mount Galunggung’s debris has turned their city of Tasikmalaya into a nightmarish landscape of gray ash. by natgeo http://ift.tt/1LVr9cM

Photograph by @paulnicklen taken while on assignment for @natgeo with @cristinamittermeier in #BC, Canada. What a thrill it was today to find a mostly healthy pocket of ochre stars. From the far reaches of Alaska to the waters of Southern California, Sea Star Wasting Syndrome has devastated the populations of many species of Sea Stars. One of the most iconic inhabitants of the nearshore, Pisaster ochraceus or the Ochre star has long been known not only as a Keystone Species, necessary for helping maintain healthy biodiversity, but the ultimate tide pool ambassador, a colorful character, introducing people of all ages to our marine ecosystem and organically connecting us via the intertidal zone, feeding our curiosity, tempting us to explore beyond the proverbial line in the sand that separates land and sea. Three years ago we took these brilliant animals for granted, now seeing a single purple star at some sites would be cause for celebration. Scientists have isolated a virus that is thought to be responsible and combined with warmer water conditions, a one-two punch spelling the demise of this once plentiful creature. #starfish #nature #wildlife #ourwarmingoceans @sea_legacy #theblob #thejourney by natgeo http://ift.tt/1Whgga2

Saher and Hanadi have a family with three children, who are named Omar, Ali and Moaz. Because of war they had to flee from their home back in Syria. Their desired destination is Germany as it presents a safe place for children.
They wanted to travel by plane, however the authorities forbade this option. Saher worked as an engineer for Al Furat Petroleum Company and Hanadi was an university professor of Chemistry. Along with them travel also their cousin, who is a dentist by profession, and his wife, a pharmacist. The war has become especially unbearable during the last year as a result of horrible living conditions and lack of safety.
Before they were forced to abandon their home, they lived a normal and happy life in town Deir Ezzor. In addition they told us that only 10% of the migrants in their group were Syrian, whom they could recognize by facial features and language. They said others are mostly from Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and other countries. Their biggest wish is for their children to have a safe and normal life.

Orangutans in the smoke. Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, island of Borneo. I photographed this mother and juvenile orangutan along the Mengkutup River a couple days ago. The forest behind them has burned, like so much forest here in Borneo right now. We saw many orangutans like these forced out to narrow unburned strips of forest along the river. Most will probably not survive because of the small area of forest left. Many orangutan conservation areas are also under threat from fire right now. I have just visited one of the important long-term research sites for orangutans in Central Kalimantan called Tuanan. Fires have penetrated the reserve, and researchers there are desperately fighting the forest fires and trying to protect wild orangutan habitat. Please do what you can to help the many groups trying to help fight the fires and save orangutan habitat across Borneo and Sumatra, such as the team at Tuanan: http://ift.tt/1H9jrcX, #orangutan, #Indonesia, #Kalimantan, #fire, #Borneo, #AsianHaze, #smoke, @NatGeoCreative, @thephotosociety. by natgeo http://ift.tt/1OX1beS
